Who can participate?

Anyone can support this research or buy a kit, but there are some exclusion criteria for being a part of the study.

The following individuals are not advised to be a part of the study:

  • younger than 3 years of age
  • wear dentures or don’t have teeth
  • undergoing chemotherapeutic or radiation treatment
  • have oral cancer
  • have epidermolysis bullosa
  • severely immunocompromised
  • do not eat through their mouth (non per os-NPO)
  • have had a significant periodontal or oral surgical procedure within the last 3 months
  • Check with your dentist or general practitioner if you have:

  • had heart surgery with prosthetic material either in past 6 months or has residual defect
  • cardiac valve repair with any prosthetic material
  • unrepaired cyanotic congenital heart disease.
  • previous infective endocarditis
  • total joint replacements
  • By signing the consent form, you agree that you do NOT meet any of the above listed criteria.  If you have one of the conditions listed above and still want to participate in our research, please contact and we will discuss individual accommodations.

Children between the ages of 3 and 18 may participate with parental permission. If a child is under age 13, we require a parent or guardian to sign a consent form, confirming they would like us to process their child’s sample. For children over 13, they will need to give their assent (non-binding approval) to ensure that they understand what microbiome sequencing involves.

Can you diagnose me with periodontal disease, cavities, or other health conditions?

This is a systematic investigation designed to develop and contribute to generalizable human knowledge. We are obtaining information about individuals under a human subject protocol approved by our IRB.  This is research and not intended to be used as a diagnostic tool of any kind.

Those who participate in our study will sign a consent form that outlines the risks and benefits of participation. You can choose whether or not you would like to participate in the research study at any time. For more information on this, and on our IRB approval, you can read our blog post here.

I want a kit, but I don’t want to be in the study.  Can I still buy a kit?

Absolutely!  While we are a citizen science project, we understand your right to opt out. Purchasing a kit and consenting to the research study are separate choices.  You may purchase a kit and decide to opt out of our study, and will still receive information about which microbes inhabit your teeth in what proportions.  If you decide to be a part of the study, your data will be used (anonymously) to make correlations with other individuals of varying lifestyle factors and medical conditions, and you will have access to this data in addition to the bacterial composition data.  Whichever option you choose, you will still be able to explore your microbiome and find out more about your body!

What do I get from uBiome and this campaign?

uBiome helps you explore and learn about your dental bacteria. We will provide detailed information on each of these bacteria, and allow you to compare your results with the aggregate results of all of our participants once a critical sample size is reached.

It’s important to be aware that our interface is designed to be a tool for personal research-not a diagnostic tool. We cannot predict the implications of your results for your long-term health. You will not be able to use your results to diagnose any medical condition.

What we offer is the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the human dental microbiome and see the bacteria in your own samples.

In the long term, we hope that this data can help shape our future knowledge and understanding of our bacteria, and help fulfill the potential of the human microbiome.

What is included in the kit?

In the standard one-site Gums kit, you will find sampling instructions, including a link to set up an account at to register your kit, track your samples, and see your data.  There will also be a sterile interdental brush, sampling tube, transparent pouch, and prepaid envelope to send your samples back.  (*note: number of tubes and swabs will vary depending on the type of kit purchased)
