Akkermansia muciniphila is commonly found in the human gut, generally at an abundance of 1-7% of the total bacterial population. This species of bacteria seems to have an interesting association with weight. Scientists have shown that Akkermansia muciniphila is 3,300 times less present in the guts of mice genetically predisposed to obesity than in normal rodents. Similar observations have been made in humans: when people have a lot of Akkermansia muciniphila in their guts, they tend to be slimmer.
Akkermansia muciniphila (pronounced “acker-MAN-see-ah MEW-sin-ee-FILL-ah”) was first isolated in 2004. The name of its genus, Akkermansia, comes from the Dutch microbiologist Antoon Akkermans in recognition of his contribution to microbial ecology. The species name, muciniphila, means “mucus-loving”, since this bacteria feeds on the mucus that lines the inner surfaces of the intestine.
The species is considered a probiotic bacterium with anti-inflammatory properties.

What Happens Next
After ordering, we will send your kit straight to you! Collect your samples with a quick swab
of the site (or sites), and mail it back to us in the provided prepaid envelope.
Your samples will travel to our office in San Francisco, where theyíll be run through our state-of-the-art DNA sequencing lab. Expect to get your results back 4-6 weeks after we receive your sample.
You will then receive access to a personal dashboard (app.ubiome.com) which breaks down the types and functions of bacteria found in your sample.
