The genus Barnesiella (pronounced “barnes-ee-ella”) is a small group of two species of bacteria that are usually only found at reasonably low levels in the gut. Generally Barnesiella makes up less than one percent of an individual’s total gut bacteria. The relatively recent discovery of Barnesiella means more investigative work will be needed to properly understand its role in health terms, but some experiments have shown that the deliberate introduction of Barnesiella into the gastrointestinal tract may prevent the spread of highly antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
The genus was named in 2007 after 1950s British microbiologist Ella Barnes, an expert in anaerobic bacteriology. Anaerobic bacteria are microbes which do not need free oxygen to live, which is why they are able to thrive in the gastrointestinal tract.

What Happens Next
After ordering, we will send your kit straight to you! Collect your samples with a quick swab
of the site (or sites), and mail it back to us in the provided prepaid envelope.
Your samples will travel to our office in San Francisco, where theyíll be run through our state-of-the-art DNA sequencing lab. Expect to get your results back 4-6 weeks after we receive your sample.
You will then receive access to a personal dashboard (app.ubiome.com) which breaks down the types and functions of bacteria found in your sample.
